Value grocer Aldi is selling a school uniform priced at £4 which it claims is the cheapest in the UK.

The Aldi deal comprises a round neck sweater, two plain polo shirts and trousers or skirt and is part of its ‘Big Back to School Blowout’ campaign which launches on July 24.

The retailer said the comparable prices at Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Asda are £6.75, £7.33 and £7.50 respectively.

Aldi managing director for corporate buying Tony Baines said: “We are delighted to be able to provide our customers with a fantastic quality school uniform range at the lowest price available in any supermarket.

The offensive is the latest push by Aldi into territory traditionally occupied by the established big four grocers, which have come under pressure from discounters such as Aldi and Lidl.

The rise of the discounters is reshaping the food retail landscape. In the 12 weeks to April 27 Aldi’s sales rose 36.1% and its market share hit a record 4.7%.
