Lidl launched its first womenswear fashion range in stores this week, as it makes a play for the value fashion market.

The move will mean the discounter is taking on fashion retailers, such as Primark and George at Asda, selling garments such as jackets, boots and jeans.

And it is likely to spook the big four supermarkets – Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda and Morrisons – some of which have already slashed food prices to compete with the growing popularity of Lidl and its German counterpart Aldi.

But will Lidl’s clothing be as popular among shoppers as its food offer?
