Retail is a tough place to be at present: despite the disparity between official figures and the real situation that everyone sees on the high street. In the absence of any other tactic, and with the stock bought and needed to be paid for after Xmas, cash generation must be the name of the game. A weak pound and weak customer demand in prospect means the opportunities for sales growth and margin recapture look, well, tough. Ouch.
