Fashion retailer New Look has appointed Paul Mason, the former Asda and Matalan chief executive, as its non-executive chairman.

Mason takes up the role immediately and replaces founder Tom Singh, who held the position of interim non-executive chairman. Singh will continue as a non-executive director of New Look.

New Look described Mason as a “prominent figure in the retail industry” and said he brings “substantial UK and international retail experience”. The 54-year old has been the boss of Asda and Matalan, as well as Somerfield. He was also European president and head of global retail at Levi Strauss.

He also holds chairmanship roles at both Cath Kidston and the Mayborn Group.

New Look chief executive Anders Kristiansen said: “Paul’s strong track record speaks for itself and I am delighted to welcome him to New Look. Paul joins at an exciting time for the company and I look forward to working with him as we focus on implementing our international strategy and continue to invest in our product, people, websites and stores.”

Mason said: “I’m delighted to be joining New Look at this particular stage in its evolution. The last few years have seen tremendous growth for the brand and I’m looking forward to joining the company and working with Anders and the team to build on the success they have already achieved.”
