John Lewis reports strong start to online Clearance

The first three days of John Lewis’s Clearance sale online recorded sales up 23% on last year.

Clearance began at 6pm on Christmas Eve and the site immediately experienced its busiest ever hour. On Christmas Day a sale was made every 10 seconds, although the rate dipped between 1pm and 4pm as people enjoyed Christmas lunch. Boxing Day saw the highest ever number of visits to the site, peaking between 11am and noon.

Christmas Eve trade in the stores continued the pattern of strong sales experienced by the chain throughout the run-up to Christmas. Christmas Eve sales were up 24% on last year with male shoppers buying lingerie, gift food and beauty leading the way.
