In a Tesco store last weekend I asked the people on the tills about Dave Lewis.

They certainly knew who he was. However they didn’t seem to know that he is soliciting Tesco staff members’ views about what should be done to improve the business. They were also under the impression that Lewis doesn’t start until next month.

It would be silly to take a single experience in a single store as representative of the impact of Lewis’s arrival across Tesco more widely.

There will always be communication breakdowns or a time lapse between messages from the top and their receipt on the shopfloor.

Lewis hopes that every member of staff will make an impression on one customer that prompts a favourable reconsideration of Tesco.

It’s a great idea. But, like much at Tesco, execution needs to match ambition.
