Net-a-Porter merged with Yoox today. Retail Week takes a look at the luxury etailer’s vital statistics.

Net a porter website

The newly merged group, Yoox Net-a-Porter, now has a combined revenue of £1.3bn and adjusted EBITDA of £108m.

  • Net-a-Porter was founded in 2000 by former journalist Natalie Massenet, and now has an annual turnover of £533m.
  • Massenet, frustrated with the lack of online shopping options for luxury brands, built on her experience as a former stylist and journalist for Women’s Wear Daily in New York and Tatler magazine in London to create an online magazine for women, where they could order the products she wrote about.
  • The website is viewed by more than 2.5 million women each month, and also focuses on an editorial content; it even launched a print magazine called Porter in early 2014.
  • In September 2014, the etailer reported pre-tax losses remained static despite its revenues increasing 22.6% for the financial year. It posted a pre-tax loss of £9.99m for the year ending March 29, a slight improvement on the pre-tax loss of £10.4m in the previous year.
  • In 2010 the business was snapped up by luxury goods conglomerate Richemont, owner of brands including Alfred Dunhill, Cartier, Chloé and Montblanc, for a reported £350m in April 2010.
  • With its headquarters in London, overseas expansion has proved a key strand in the retailer’s growth and it has continually targeted new markets. In 2006, it opened a distribution centre in New York and launched a US website, which also ships to Canada and Latin America. It now ships to 170 countries worldwide.
  • Its chief executive Mark Sebba stepped down last July after 10 years at the helm, he has yet to be replaced.
  • The company is an early adopter of technologies, with its 300-strong IT team headed by chief information officer Hugh Fahy. One of its most recent innovations was a mobile app called The Netbook, which is an experiment into social commerce. The retailer asked 6,000 of its users to test social shopping, while learning about online communities and data.
