Asos has poached Amazon finance boss Shaun McCabe as it further strengthens its management team.

McCabe was vice-president of finance at Amazon EU SARL - the Luxembourg-based holding company for Amazon’s European operations including the UK - and there is speculation that he is likely to take up international responsibilities at Asos formerly held by Jon Kamaluddin, who revealed he was leaving in April.

International operations are a critical part of Asos’s rapidly growing business and account for 65% of sales. That contribution is set to grow as Asos prepares to launch its much-anticipated Chinese site at the beginning of October.

McCabe, who also sat on the board of Amazon’s DVD rental service Lovefilm, was hired at Amazon by Brian McBride, now chairman of Asos, and was part of a team of big hitters brought in to propel growth. Incumbent Amazon UK managing director Christopher North was drafted in at the same time.

McCabe was previously head of trading finance at Homebase and has held other finance roles at Home Retail Group.

Asos declined to comment. No one at Amazon was available for comment.
