  • Comment on: No drama over VAT rise

    Andrew Smith's comment 23-Jun-2010 4:00 pm

OK - The VAT rise (2.5%) shouldn't prove that challenging for consumers, especially once retailers shave a little margin to help (as many will - it's called competition). But there could be a rather drastic, unintended consequence here: Retailers will spend millions urging consumers to beat the rush and many big ticket, items will be bought on the never never - often at interest rates which will outweigh any saving the consumer has made (http://bit.ly/bP6NV2). So, by the middle of 2011 (it takes that long), many more will be, joining the 11% of Brits who already have debt worries.
