Oxford Circus is due to undergo a £4 million Japanese-style makeover, which will allow shoppers to cross the busy junction diagonally for the first time and massively ease congestion in the area.

In plans being shown to Londoners this week, Westminster City Council has unveiled a design based on Tokyo's Shibuya crossing. It hopes to begin the work in summer next year.

There are also further plans to widen the pavements on Oxford Street, Regent Street and Bond Street in an effort to make the area more "shopper friendly".

The New West End Company has welcomed the move, which is part of a wider £1 billion investment in London's West End over the next four years.
