Argos charged 190,000 shoppers twice for purchases made in its stores last Friday.
A "systems error" was blamed for the problem, which customers discovered after looking at their card and bank accounts.
Credit and debit cards were involved and the total sum is likely to be million of pounds, according to a spokesman for the retailer.
Argos has apologised for the mistake and is crediting the accounts of all shoppers involved.
